Fallback profile picture

» The extended operating radius due to the long hosepack allowed us to forgo the second manhole for each segment, saving us all the additional work this involved. Meanwhile, the power source could be placed outside the gate body together with the wirefeeder. This not only gives the welder better freedom of movement, but also facilitates access and recovery for emergency rescue workers, which is crucial for us. «

Bernhard Brindl, Project Manager in the Hydro Business department at the Bilfinger Industrial Services site

Requests

Construction from steel components for the Traunleiten hydroelectric power plant, which is undergoing significant reconstruction works. The contract covers the engineering, production, delivery, and assembly of 23 different steel components weighing around 350 tons in total, including intake gates, turbine intake bulkhead gates, coarse screens to protect the turbines, and two weir gates (fish belly flap gates). The gate bodies were divided into three segments, with the longest measuring in at around 16 meters. With a segment length of 16 meters, at least two of these access points would be required to allow for welding tasks to be taken care of inside the gate body with the equipment previously available. Welders would have needed to take the power source, including the wirefeeder, inside the workpiece in order to achieve all the necessary welding positions.

Solution

An eight-meter-long PullMig welding torch (MHP 320i PM W/MHP 280i PM G) with a TPS 500i. The extended operating radius due to the long hosepack allowed to forgo the second manhole for each segment, saving all the additional work this involved. Because every additional manhole represents a potential weak point where water could penetrate.
